Northern Mozambique faces extreme shortages of medical staff, surgical services, and hospital infrastructure, leaving millions without access to life-saving care while churches and communities actively seek long-term, compassionate solutions.

Population and Poverty

  • Northern Mozambique population. ~10–12 million people.

  • People living on less than USD 1–2 per day. Majority.

  • Rural population share. ~65–70 percent.

  • Internally displaced people due to conflict and cyclones. >1 million in the north.

Health System Capacity

  • Physicians nationwide. ~1 per 10,000 people.

  • Surgeons in northern Mozambique. Single digits for millions of people.

  • Hospital bed density. <1 bed per 1,000 people.

  • Many districts have no surgical services at all.

Infrastructure and Access

  • Travel time to higher-level care. Often 6–24 hours.

  • Roads frequently impassable during rainy season.

  • Power and water outages common in health facilities.

Spiritual and Community Context

  • Northern provinces majority Muslim.

  • Multiple unreached people groups.

  • Churches actively request medical mission partnership.

  • Healthcare remains one of the few trusted community entry points.

Maternal and Surgical Need

  • Maternal mortality ratio. ~450–500 per 100,000 live births.

  • C-sections unavailable or unsafe in many districts.

  • Trauma, hernias, obstructed labor, infections often untreated.

  • Surgical care access estimated at <10 percent of need in rural north.
